Overview

A knit-garment order is not one job. It is yarn bought by the kilo, fabric knitted by a subcontractor, dyed by a mill, cut by colour and size, sewn, embroidered, packed into numbered cartons and shipped against a letter of credit — each step at a different party, each with its own losses. This module plans all of it from the sales order, and every step it plans becomes a standard Odoo document.

WHY THIS MATTERS

Yarn buying stays purchase.order. Knitting and dyeing stay standard subcontracting. The calendar stays project tasks. Garments stay manufacturing orders. Shipping stays stock pickings. Nothing stores a quantity that a standard document already holds, so valuation, reservation, traceability and accounting keep working exactly as Odoo intends — and the accounts always agree with the plan.

How an order flows through the factory

One confirmed sales order drives the whole chain. Each box is a step a person actually does; underneath is the ordinary Odoo document it becomes.

Buyer's order → Garment plan (+ order project, cost centre, one draft production order per colour and size) → the eight stages below → shipped carton and invoice.

Running alongside all eight: the Time & Action calendar dates every activity on working days and counts the delay, and the order's cost centre collects every purchase, subcontract charge and labour hour, so profit per order is a fact rather than an estimate.

Dashboard and order board

The management dashboard answers “how is the factory doing?” without opening ten screens: orders in view, pieces produced, awaiting production, ready to ship, delivered and overdue — with six charts, quality, stock and, for the costing role, the money.

The dashboard carries its own sidebar: every screen the user may open, grouped by stage, with a type-to-find search box.

The eight stages

1 · Yarn and grey fabric

Kilos per yarn from the fabric's own composition and the size-wise consumption, grossed up by the knitting loss and the yield, with bags always rounded up. Free stock is checked first, so only the shortfall is bought; requests for quotation go out per vendor. Knitting runs in-house or as a subcontract order to the knitter, with yarn sent, fabric expected, received, rejected and wasted all tracked.

2 · Dyeing

A line per colour and fabric, each tied to an approved lab dip — a mill cannot be asked to run a shade nobody signed off. Grey fabric goes out as a subcontract order; what comes back, what is short and what was wasted are tracked per colour, so mills can be compared and losses claimed with numbers.

3 · Cutting

Colour by size, with the marker, layers and ratio. Good, excess and rejected pieces are reported separately, and the fabric really consumed is posted onto the production orders while rejects are scrapped against them — so garment cost uses actual kilos and the leftover for the next order is known.

4 · Final recipe and cost

Fabric per colour and size plus every accessory, counted by whichever of eight methods fits it — per piece, per dozen, percentage, fixed, per colour, per size, per order or consumption-based. The cost explodes garment → dyed fabric → grey fabric → yarn, with subcontracting and labour, per piece and per dozen.

5 · Packing and export

Cartons numbered straight from the order quantity, colour by colour and size by size. One weight per garment fills the net weight of every carton not yet weighed — and a carton already weighed on the scale is never overwritten. The packing list prints with weights and volume, attached to the delivery.

6 · Time & Action

Thirteen activities dated from the quantity and the plan per day, on the company's working calendar and holidays — forward from the order or backward from the delivery date. Actual dates, delay days and a daily alert to the responsible person mean a slip shows up weeks before shipment, not on the day the buyer calls.

Embroidery and printing is an optional seventh stage: a vendor order per process with pieces sent, received and rejected by colour and size, and the cost landing on that order's profit. An order that is not embroidered simply has no such plan. Production and delivery are standard Odoo manufacturing and pickings, with a guard that stops a shipment going out above what was actually produced unless an authorised person overrides it.

Manufacturing, Quality and Project — the standard apps

The planning lives in this module; the work itself happens in Odoo's own apps. Production is real Manufacturing, inspections are real Quality, the order calendar is a real Project, and every movement is real Inventory. Nothing here is a private copy that has to be reconciled later — which is exactly why the accounts always agree with the plan.

Manufacturing. Odoo's own shop-floor overview — the garment orders are ordinary manufacturing orders.

A garment order. One per colour and size, consuming the fabric that cutting really posted, plus every trim.

Work orders. Cutting, sewing, quality check and packing — the four steps inside each order.

Quality. The nine checkpoints the module installs appear in Odoo's own Quality app.

Inspections. Yarn, grey and dyed fabric receipts, cutting, sewing, the final garment and packing.

One project per order. Each confirmed garment order gets its own project, so costs and profitability roll up the standard way.

Grouped by order. Every production order of a garment plan in one list, so nothing is lost among unrelated jobs.

The product. An ordinary product with colours, sizes and a Garments tab — the same record Sales, Purchasing and Inventory use.

Where it plugs into the standard apps

These are the exact points where a garment order meets Odoo's own records. Nothing is copied or mirrored: the sales order, the product, the purchase order, the manufacturing order and the quality check each carry the plan they belong to, so you can walk from any document to the order and back.

The buyer's order. A Garment Plan button appears on confirmation, every line carries its Dozens, and the lines are colour-size variants.

Its Export tab. Export flag, country, reference, cost centre, shipment and letter-of-credit references — what the bank and the forwarder ask for.

The product's Garment tab. Item type, size-wise fabric consumption per size, and the accessory and packing rules that drive every calculation.

The manufacturing order. Its Miscellaneous tab names the Garment Plan, the source sales order and the order project.

The quality check. Raised on the garment production order by one of the nine checkpoints the module installs.

The purchase order. Yarn, knitting and dyeing orders carry the plan, the stage they belong to and the order project, so the cost lands on that order.

The order project. Created from the Garment Order Time & Action template, linked back to its sales order, with the activities tracked to completion.

Material accountability

Fabric and yarn are where a garment order's money goes, and where it quietly leaks. Every kilo is measured against what was promised, and the difference becomes a number on a document instead of an argument at the gate.

Yarn bag register. Every bag weighed on arrival against the spinner's standard weight; the difference, in kilos and per cent, is what you claim back.

Fabric roll register. Weight, GSM, width, shrinkage and shade per roll, checked against the agreed tolerance — out-of-spec rolls are stopped before dyeing or cutting.

  • Yarn allocation to a knitter records the fabric that yarn should give back, allowing for the agreed wastage, and measures the actual yield against it.
  • Yarn returns bring leftover, excess or bad yarn back into stock with a reason, instead of it quietly staying at the mill.
  • Rejected goods are never a dead end: rework, downgrade, scrap or return to the supplier, each with the real stock document behind it and a signed, dated decision.
  • Nine quality checkpoints from yarn receipt to the finished garment, with failures going to a Rejected location.
  • Lot and roll traceability: with one setting, a finished garment traces back to its dye lot, its roll and the yarn it was made from.

Reports that answer a question

Production tracking. One row per order and per stage: status, planned and actual dates, delay.

Vendor performance. Ordered, received, pending, lead time and days late per vendor and stage.

Also included: yarn requirement and procurement, fabric planning, Time & Action, dyeing and dye-mill vendor analysis, cutting with reconciliation, BOM cost, order status, wastage analysis (allowed against actual, per process and vendor), embroidery and the carton register. Every list exports to Excel, offers pivot and graph modes where it makes sense, and prints as a PDF — 17 PDF layouts in all, including the export packing list and the management summary.

Why this one, and not a cheaper add-on

There are three kinds of alternative on the market, and it is worth knowing which you are comparing against.

A free industry package

Standard apps, pre-configured. Excellent as a starting point — but it knows nothing about yarn counts, dye lots or carton weights. Every garment rule stays in your head and your spreadsheets.

A small paid add-on

Usually a handful of fields on the production order, or a colour-and-size grid on the quotation. Cheap, and genuinely useful — but it stops long before the dye mill, the cutting floor and the packing list.

A full production vertical

What this is. Eight stages, the registers that keep suppliers honest, costing, export papers and the reports a management meeting runs on — at the lower end of what a vertical of this depth costs.

Setup, roles and configuration

One installation sets everything up

Installing the module installs the apps it needs and switches on variants, units of measure, lots, storage locations, multi-step routes, work orders, subcontracting and analytic accounting.

It then creates the Colour, Size and Style attributes, product categories, fabric types, four work centres, the Time & Action template, the garment stage locations, nine quality checkpoints, sequences and the user roles. The setup is idempotent and re-runs safely on every upgrade.

Formulas are configuration, not code

Loss percentages per stage, wastage rules per process, vendor and date, bag and cone sizes, size-wise consumption, accessory rules, carton types and fabric quality tolerances are all master data.

Change a number and every future order uses it. Eight Excel import templates load the master data, and a demo-data wizard fills a test database with realistic orders at every stage for training.

Thirteen roles, so people see their own work: Garments User, Planner, Planning Manager, Costing and Delivery Override, plus per-stage managers for yarn procurement, fabric, dyeing, cutting, embroidery, production, quality and packing, and an administrator. Approvals lock quantities after sign-off, every document tracks its changes with who approved it and why, and record rules keep companies separate.

Frequently asked questions

Is this standard Odoo, or a separate system?

Standard Odoo 19 Enterprise, plus this one module that plans and controls. Purchases, transfers, subcontracting, manufacturing, quality and accounting are all the standard apps — which is why the accounts always agree with the plan.

Does it work on Odoo Online (SaaS)?

No. Odoo Online cannot install custom modules. Use Odoo.sh or your own server. Odoo 19 Enterprise is required, because the module uses the Enterprise project, quality and cost-analysis apps rather than rebuilding them.

Our losses and consumption differ from the defaults. Is that a problem?

No. Every loss percentage, yield, bag size, consumption figure and accessory rule is master data you set. Nothing is hard-coded, and rules can differ per process, per vendor and per date.

Is it tied to one country or currency?

No. No country, currency or tax is built into the module; you install your own localisation as usual. Export orders carry their country, shipment and letter-of-credit references for the documents a bank or customs broker asks for.

We only knit some of our fabric and never embroider. Does that break the flow?

No. Knitting can be in-house or subcontracted, fabric can simply be bought, and embroidery or printing is optional. The stage strip skips a stage an order does not use and shows the next one it is really waiting on.
